Computer security, data security, identity theft are all big topics discussed frequently – threats exists from hackers, viruses and common thieves.
The issue is significant enough that the United States government has established US-CERT (United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team).
The website allows people to report incidents, including phishing or a newly found vulnerability. It provides Security Bulletins, Technical Security Alerts and Security Tips, just to name a few.
I think it’s a great resource to help all of us protect our computers and the data on them.
But what does all this have to do with physical security?
Staying on top of the latest phishing techniques or virus helps when your equipment is ‘safely’ in your hands. But once your laptop or desktop computer is stolen, the risk to your business assets has gone up significantly. The thieves will now have hours to try to hack into your systems (if it takes that long.) US-CERT is a great resource, but only helpful if you maintain control of your equipment.
