Businesses always need to be responsive to changes in technology. Today, one of the biggest shifts has been the move towards device consolidation; where it was once necessary to supply employees with a laptop and a tablet, the arrival of powerful and versatile devices such as Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 has enabled businesses to make real savings, while still keeping up with the latest technological developments. This trend is reflected in the news that major global companies Coca-Cola, BMW, Lotus F1 and Louis Vuitton have all made the decision to switch to the Surface Pro 3.

Any investment of this kind is always a big decision, which requires clarity about the longevity of the Surface Pro 3 itself and about the ongoing availability of Microsoft Surface accessories. If trying to find devices that are mobile, practical and powerful, it’s important to have a clear picture of compatible products and software that can extend and increase capability and, most importantly, employee productivity. In our latest post, we look at a few of the questions that are frequently asked by businesses – and regular users – about the Surface Pro 3.

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST STRENGTHS OF THE SURFACE PRO 3?

For the Surface Pro 3 to replace laptops and tablets, it has to be able to match them for both versatility and productivity. The Surface Pro 3’s i3, i5 and i7 CPUs strengthen its credentials as a genuine all-in-one device. It easily copes with processor-intensive tasks and desktop software. Another real success story has been the new aluminium pen, which can turn on your display and launch OneNote with a single click. Moreover, improvements to the pressure sensitivity of the screen mean the Surface Pro 3 is now a genuinely convenient alternative to pen and paper. Throw a wireless presentation remote into the mix and you have a device that’s tailor-made for taking minutes and delivering effective presentations.

IS IT EASY TO USE WITH SECOND AND THIRD SCREENS?

Extending a workspace with one or two extra screens lets users access all the information they need instantly. The power of the Surface Pro 3 means it’s more than capable of handling the kind of tasks commonly associated with a desktop computer. However, with space at a premium and various issues of compatibility, there can be problems when trying to connect the Surface to multiple monitors. The Surface Docking Station is one available solution, albeit one that can eat away at any cost savings. Whether using a DVI or VGA monitor, a multi display adapter lets you extend your Surface’s screen easily and without fuss.

DOES IT CONNECT EASILY TO MY OTHER DEVICES?

If you need to use the Surface Pro 3 as a desktop PC, you may want to increase the number of USB ports and connect the device to a Gigabit Ethernet connection. However, like the Touch Cover, the Surface Pro 3 Docking Station isn’t included with the device, and at around $200 it’s not cheap. Of course, there are other compatible products on the market which can do a similar job, often for much less. Here at Kensington, we’re currently working on a series of new docking stations. CAN IT MATCH THE PORTABILITY OF A TABLET?

The reduced weight and improved 12” screen of the Surface Pro 3 are two of the most noticeable improvements compared to earlier models. The combination means the Pro 3 can now easily function as both a laptop and a tablet: it handles screen-demanding productivity tasks as well as more routine ones like checking and sending emails. The Surface Pro 3 only weighs 1.76lbs, which is a half-pound less than the bigger MacBook Air. The new multi-angle kickstand is another positive innovation, which makes it easy to adjust the screen as you would with a laptop and as a result, much simpler to use the tablet for typing, note-taking or drawing. If you’re using the Pro 3 on the move, it may be worth investing in an optimized laptop backpack, which includes secure compartments for the device, as well as enough space for accessories and other devices.

CAN I USE IT SECURELY?

Whatever the model and make of your laptop, the chances are that it comes with a security lock slot. The benefits of this for protecting your device from theft are clear.  For iPads and other devices, locking can be solved relatively easily with a SecureBack case. Because of the kickstand and larger screen, this solution is not yet available for Surface Pro 3. However, the Surface Pro 3 Docking Station does come equipped with a security lock slot and so can be secured against theft with a mini saver lock or a traditional keyed laptop lock.  For thinner devices our new MiniSaver lock and Mini Security Slot provide security and laptop lock peace of mind.
